Resume Tips

Here are some general guidelines for creating a professional, successful resume.

• Be detailed, but not wordy
• Use one, readable font throughout
• Spell-check or have others read your resume before sending--bad spelling and/or grammar doesn't make a good first impression
• Format your resume in chronological order, starting with the most current information.  Use dates in a month/year format
• Keep the format simple
• Keep cover letter to one page and include the following: 
  • The source from which you found the job opportunity (ad, website, etc)
  • The specific job description for which you are applying--be focused
  • A specific name in the salutation -- never use "To whom it may concern", as this is not personal and may not trigger a personal response to your letter
  • An introduction statement of your qualifications and a closing statement.
• State what specific roles you played in previous positions, including what tasks were accomplished with what tools
• Include the phases of the System Development Life Cycle you have participated in--analysis, design, coding, testing, implementation.
• State the hardware/software environment in which you worked
• List the software tools you have used in business situations and a separate list of software tools used in school or personal development
• Include your education background, only if currently pursuing or have a degree
• Include certifications under Education
• Include a skill assessment of yourself, stating how many years of experience with each skill and a self-rating
